TOEIC Conversations are the third task on the TOEIC listening section.
In this task, you hear a conversation between two people. You must then answer three questions about the conversation.
Use the strategies below to succeed on the conversations on the TOEIC listening section.
Main Ideas
One of the three questions is normally a main idea question. This asks the purpose of the conversation. Take a look at these example main idea questions:
- Why did the man ask for the meeting?
- What does the woman need?
Specific Details
Other questions ask for more specific details. Think about these examples:
- What time will the man arrive the next day?
- Where did the woman leave the report?
Inferences
Sometimes you need to infer the purpose or meaning. This means you need to take the information they give you and
guess. However, it should be more accurate than a guess.
Imagine a woman is yelling at a man. She says some mean things. You could infer that she is angry. Although she never says, “I am angry”, you know from her tone of voice and her language. That is an inference.
